Tea Leaf Green - Looking West - NEW ALBUM
Sup Vags? One of my favorite rock n’ roll bands is finally releasing another album and I couldn’t be more excited. I’ve been watching these guys rock it for years now and it’s nice to see this San Fran based group take it to the studio once again. Thoughts from Trevor Garrod on Looking West:
“We’ve been waiting a long time to make this record” says Trevor Garrod, “In a band like ours we have so many songs that we play and love but never had a chance to record in the studio. It’s almost as if we’ve loved these songs too much and were afraid to encase them forever behind the iron bars of a vacuum sealed, shrink wrapped studio album. We have come to realize that we can only truly set these beloved tunes free by putting them all down on a record. We are releasing them into the wild. We are casting them out to sea. We are ‘Looking West’ into the setting sun and launching them into outer space. These songs are messages in bottles washed up on foreign shores, alien transmissions from distant worlds, memories from our fading youth, and reminders of our endless and repetitious search for love and freedom.” (via TLG.com)

Hey Vagabonds! Sorry for being MIA over the past week, I’ve been on a bit of a vacation. I had the pleasure of visit from a dear friend from high school. Before we took off for a couple days of riding up in the nations highest peaks, I took him to see Tea Leaf Green.

“Who’s Tea Leaf Green?”, he asked. I was seriously shocked. Feldman is big into the jam scene, so I figured he probably knew about them from seeing them at a festival like I did. After all, their hit “Taught To Be Proud”, won a coveted Jammy Award a couple years back! My description of the band didn’t really ring a bell for him, so I said: “Fair enough, you’ll just have to see for yourself”.

These guys are one of my favorites and we caught them right in the middle of their 1 week Colorado tour. I really dig what these guys are laying down. I think what really got me hooked on them was Trevor Garrod’s voice. His voice just feels so in harmony with the music, I think his tone is pretty unique and he definitely has given me the chills. What kept me coming back was the incredible bass skills of Reed Mathis; this guy’s really got some balls. There are so many mediocre bass players out there, it’s nice to see a bass player that can really steal the show. Long story short, TLG did NOT dissapoint and I expect nothing less!

This particular show reminded me of one of a Vagabond’s simplest pleasures; showing others new music. After all, when you’re a Vagabond, sometimes all that live music can run together. I try to find something I appreciate in every show I go to.  On that desperate search for the next band that’s going to blow your socks off, you sometimes forget that there’s tons of music out there, and not everything is the next big sound. Tea Leaf Green’s does have that big sound and some balls to back it up. I will always remember that show, because it made me remember why I’m a Vagabond. The joy of watching someone discover music for the very first time, is one of the many reasons you can never stop being passionate about music.

If you’re from NYC or Philly, don’t forget to check out their shows at Terminal 5 and the TLA, respectively. TLG will be playing a legendary cover song with our friends at Galactic, requested BY YOU. Choose from:

  • Don’t Do It - The Band
  • Starman - David Bowie
  • I Want You Back - Jackson 5
  • So Lonely - The Police Can’t You hear Me Knockin’ - The Rolling Stones
  • You Can Make It If You Try - Sly & The Family Stone
