I’m excited to announce that Boston five piece Viva Viva have not only released a shiny new limited edition hot-pink vinyl EP (with free mp3 download) but are also playing a show this Sunday, May 27th at Public Assembly.
I was first introduced to Viva Viva down at the Converse Rubber Tracks studio and I’ve been absolutely in love with their gritty blues rock inspired music since. They have taken Boston by storm winning Rock Artist of the Year at the 2011 Boston Music Awards (and Live Artist of the Year nominee), a critics-picked “Album of the Year” from Time Out Boston. Now it’s time for them to show NYC what’s up. As a chick that grew up in Boston I couldn’t be more stoked to see them this Sunday. If you love what you hear above then listen to the rest of What’s The Kim Deal? over on their SoundCloud page and then join me this Sunday at Public Assembly.
As a huge Brother Ali fan I’m excited to announce the release of his newest seven track EP, The Bite Marked Heart. Artists like honte, Stokley Williams (Mint Condition), Nikki Jean and Aby Wolf have come on board to collaborate on a bunch of the tracks. Brother Ali is currently working on his sixth studio album, Mourning In America and Dreaming In Color which should be coming very soon.
You can stream the full album below and download is for free right here!
Every week I get a beautiful email from Ghostly’s listening service Drip.fm. It’s currently in beta, but I would highly suggest requesting an invite. About a month ago they sent me over this gorgeous EP and I’m sad to say I haven’t had the chance to write about it even though I’ve been listening non-stop. I think “Exhale” is my favorite track, but the whole EP is perfection from start to finish.
Beacon is currently on tour with another Ghostly artist who I’m sure you’ve heard all about, TYCHO. That’s a show I would love to see. Beacon is mellow ambient electro the rolls and dips with a melodic R&B inspired falsetto. One listen and you’ll be hooked. You can download the full EP for $4 on bandcamp. Grab it. It’s worth every penny.
This is the description the band uses and I think it’s perfect. “Instead of fighting over toys in the basement, this brother and sister formed an electro-acoustic duo (in the basement).”
“Fools Fools” is my favorite track of their newly released EP titled To Rush, Roar and Murmur. It has a very trip-hop feel. The track is full of Eerie haunting vocals mixed with an interesting combo of electronic and acoustic instrumentation. Think The Knife meets Portishead.
Listen to the full EP below and then grab it for free on their bandcamp.
Close to this time last year I was introduced to Incan Abraham at The Pantry Party’s annual Texas Fire House shindig. Make sure not to miss out this Saturday, Oct 15th. All proceeds go to local food pantries. As I was saying, Incan Abraham came from L.A. to play CMJ and played at the Texas Fire House as well. I’ve been a passionate supporter since seeing them there.
There are few bands that live up to their recorded sound. Incan Abraham manages to exceed it every time. Seeing them live is such a treat. They are fantastic and have never made a recording I didn’t love. Their new EP Ancient Vacation is no different. You can stream their new EP below and get it while it’s free cause I have a feeling it wont be for long. Make sure to take in all their dreamy psych pop live at CMJ next week.
This is probably what the soundtrack to Grease would sound like if it was remade in to a lo-fi hipster infused musical. “Honey Eye Bee Leave Ewe” is the first single off of their newest EP FOOTBALL which dropped earlier this month.
You can stream the full EP on their bandcamp page and then purchase it for a pay what you want price.
Hearing the opening guitar riff one immediately thinks this must be a new Black Keys track, but don’t be fooled. When the vocals hit and you know it’s some new dirty blues Jr. Kimbrough inspired rock more reminiscent of North Mississippi Allstars then anything else.
The Artist responsible for this incredible sound is Austin born and raised, Gary Clark Jr. By his list of accomplishments; Austin’s mayor, Kirk Watson, declaring May 3rd to be “Gary Clark Jr. Day.” when he was just 17, winning the Austin Music Award for Best Blues and Electric Guitarist on three separate occasions and being picked by Eric Clapton as the only young newcomer to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival makes him a good bet for the next hugely successful performer to come out of Austin, TX. After listening to “Bright Lights’ and “Don’t Owe You A Thang” I’m sure you’ll agree.
