Festy Fun 2010 // Electric Avenue // September 4th and 5th // Denver, CO
Vags,
We are just ten days away from what I believe will be one of the can’t miss festies of the summer. Electric Avenue will bring so many of my favorite local and national acts together for some intense fun on Labor Day weekend, September 4th and 5th. Why am I telling you now and not next week? Great question! You might already have plans to go romp around in a tent for the long weekend, get in touch with nature and all that bullshit. I’m here to convince you otherwise…
Who wants to sit in god-awful bumper to bumper traffic on i-70 going to and from the mountains just to camp alongside every other front range douche bag who is taking their screaming children to the woods for the weekend? I don’t. What better way than to show your patriotism than to see some kickass American music? Since you probably don’t know what Labor Day really means anyways… I may entice you with some delicious brews, amazing street food and the love of music to reward yourself for your labor contributions to the good ‘ol US of A. To further sweeten the deal, there’s late night music all weekend. I mean, going to bed at 9pm in your tent? Totally not cool when you could be hanging out with me at the beer tent :)
Without further a due, my picks for the festival:
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe- Funkiest EVER. Ya’ll know them well.
Pnuma Trio- Bringing bass to your ears with love. Great electronic group from Memphis.
Greensky Bluegrass- Traditional bluegrass instruments, not so traditional sound.
Great American Taxi- Featuring Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon, GAT rocks the local Denver jam scene.
Kyle Hollingsworth Band- you know that Kyle guy I always talk about from String Cheese Incident? Yah, this is a good time to see him with his band and jamin out with Karl Denson in the All Star Jam.
Euforquestra- The loves of my life who you are probably sick of hearing of, so check out my love for them in previous posts:http://www.musicvagabond.com/search/euforquestra
Juno What!?- Featuring Dave Watts from Motet, these guys remind me of Prince with their funky sound and lots of samples.
Check out the full schedule and unreasonably low prices on the website: http://www.electricavenuedenver.com/

Festy Fun 2010 // Camp Euforia // Lone Tree, IA // July 16-17

This festy is a bit closer to my heart as it’s the production of a band you’ve heard me talk a lot about. Euforquestra, who currently reside in Fort Collins, CO actually hail from Iowa. After starting this festival 7 years ago, Euf still makes the annual trip back home to put together this festy fun for the fans that have been there from the very beginning. It’s a small, intimate festival which is sometimes exactly what you need! My advice, make sure to get into town early and hit the pre-party on Thursday July 15. The Iowa Yacht Club is a regular venue for Euf so the crowd will be a guaranteed good time. Check out my picks for the festival:

Euforquestra- OK, well you knew this was my first pick. Learn more about the band from my interview with them here: MV Interview with Mike Tallman of Euforquestra. And don’t forget to download their latest album, Soup for FREE here!

Mountain Standard Time- Bluegrass boys from Nederland, CO never dissapoint with their funky twist on the traditional music style. These guys are also playing the pre-party at the Iowa Yacht Club so yet another reason to get into town early!

Juno What!?- This supremely electro-funkalicious booty shakin crew from Denver will have you groovin and get you ready for Friday’s late-night set. Listen.

Grosso Family Band- Check out Adam Grosso (Euforquestra) and fam in an intimate Sunday morning coffee set.

Frozen Dead Guy Days- Nederland, CO

Holla Vagabonds! Looking for something to do in CO this weekend? We you could shred some gnar… OR… go to Frozen Dead Guy Days in Ned! I’m actually snowboarding and going to FDGD, so I don’t want to hear any excuses! This is a festival NOT to be missed. This corny reporter in the video will give you a flavor for what’s going on.

The history is actually incredibly interesting and awesome. You can read it here:http://www.nederlandchamber.org/pdfs/fdgd_thestory10.pdf but long story short- There’s a crynoically frozen guy kept in a tuff shed up on a hill in Nederland. Every year, the town has a festival to celebrate his life. What makes Frozen Dead Guy Days so special? “There’s not a lot of little towns in Colorado that have a frozen dead guy in a tuff shed.” Enough said.

Our friends Euforquestra, Mountain Standard TimeKyle Hollingsworth and others from the String Cheese Incident will be entertaining all weekend. There will be funnel cake, coffin races and great music- so don’t miss it!

Happy Hump Day Vagabonds!

Wanted to share one of Colorado’s little secrets with you to help you get through the week. This is some REAL Colorado Bluegrass! The band’s name is so appropriately called Mountain Standard Time and I’ve seen them a handful of times in the Denver area. These are some pretty talented guys; cop that shit!
