The Herd - ‘Sum Of It All’ //
Start your morning with the tasty new single from The Herd. Twenty-eleven marks a decade worth of supreme aussie hip hop from this group, and they’ll be celebrating with a new album due out mid-year.

Last week at a CMJ showcase for Hello Music I was introduced to a very nice, very tall, very good looking guy who also happens to work for Giant Step. Sounds like prince charming right? It was kind of loud in the venue due to all the bands performing, but after speaking to him for a bit I noticed he had a slight accent. Turns out he’s from Austria.
We got to talking about who his favorite artists were and he said something like, “well besides the one’s I grew up listening to…” Then I obviously made him promise to email me all of the German hip hop he grew up listening to and he actually followed through.
It’s often said that math is the universal language. I don’t understand math (I had to take calculus twice in college) so I’m gonna go with music is the universal language and I think the guys who wrote the first track I’m about to share would agree. Trust me I don’t understand a word of German, but I know good music when I hear it. I was also relieved to see that the style and attire of the early 80’s and 90’s hip hop era was just as ridiculous in Europe as I remember it being here. Don’t get me wrong that shit was hot then and I couldn’t get enough of it, but now Yikes!
Below are to of my favorite video/songs that were sent to me. The first is called “Esperanto” by Freundeskreis. I was told, “It’s kinda useless if you don’t understand the lyrics”, but I disagree. If you know what Esperanto is then you get a general feel for the song, but you can go here for a translation if you’re as curious as I was.
The video below is a group called, Dynamite Deluxe from the early 90’s who apparently “Put German Hip Hop on the map.” Like I said I don’t understand any of it but the beat is chill and the chorus is catchy whether you speak German or not.
music from my ears. to yours. with love. jp
