Last night I had the chance to catch EMA (Erika M Anderson) at Glasslands Gallery. Until then I had only heard “The Grey Ship” and “Milkman” which are great songs, but don’t really give you a feel for how she would be live. Let me tell you she is fantastic. Her band is tight and right on point. The drummer looks about 15 or16 and that because she’s EMA’s little sister.
During the harder sounding songs she was totally channeling Courtney Love. You can tell she takes her sound from 90’s grunge rock. She was personable, talking to the crowd, swigging Makers Mark from the bottle and then delving immediately back in to performer mode. If you have the chance definitely check her out live and pick up her new album Past Life, Martyred Saints. Above is a short clip of her performance at Glasslands as well as an mp3 of “The Grey Ship.” The track is way more epic live. It will give you the chills.
New Yorkers please help my friends out. If you go you’d be in for a real treat. All 4 bands and the promoters are such lovely people I would absolutely hate for this to be cancelled. This show is HIGHLY recommended. Plus if you go next time you see me you’ll get a hug from me.
So we have the above sicknasty show coming up— but apparently the venue is giving the boys some pressure about selling more pre-show tickets. If you’ll be in NYC, would like to go to the show, and want to REALLY HELP OUT, please buy the tix in advance instead of at the door. I don’t want them to cancel on us. :*(
I came across Bachelorette while scanning the artists page over at Souterrain Transmissions which by the way is a fantastic label out of Berlin, Germany. Make sure to give them a good once over when you have the chance.
Anyways, back to the lady of the hour. Bachelorette aka Annabel Alpers is a minimal synth goddess with a voice of an angel hailing all the way from Auckland, New Zealand. The song above “Blanket” will help you to better understand what it is I’m trying convey with that description. She is currently on tour with Peter Bjorn and John, but will be taking a little break tomorrow, May 4th to head on over to Glasslands Gallery for a more intimate performance. One definitely not to be missed. Make sure to pick up your tickets ahead of time here.
America and Australia Join Hands//The Twerps and Family Portrait
Tonight will be a very important night in world relations. On this night Australian Band, The Twerps share the stage with New Jersey born and bred American badasses, Family Portrait. This historical event will take place at Glassland’s Gallery.
Things may get a little crazy but with these bands coming together we are hoping to make peace between these two waring nations. Fingers crossed for a cease fire. But seriously, it’s going to be a great show so if you’re in the NYC or Brooklyn area you best be getting your asses down there!
So far we have introduced to you three out of the five bands that will be helping us celebrate our birthday this Thursday, Jan 6th. Paragraph, Strawberry Hands and Julian Lynch. Words cannot express how excited we are to have this fourth band on board with us. We have a long history with these two. They were one of the first bands that jp interviewed when MV was just getting started. We have watched them grow as we have grown and feel a real special connection to this group. We also named them as one of our 10 artitsts to watch in 2010 and they have more than lived up to the nomination.
Their set will start around 10:45 pm and you would be a fool to miss them. They are fresh off of their tour in Israel and ready to get back rocking out with their fans and friends in Brooklyn. We’ve seen them many times and they never disappoint. So come on out and see what all the hype is about. Event details are below!
Last week we announced that we will be throwing a One Year Birthday Bash, featuring five amazing bands. We have put in tons of work this year and we wanted a way to celebrate, thank our supporters and rock out, while giving back to the community. With help from our friends at The Pantry Party we will be able to accomplish all of the above with a special emphasis on the “giving back to the community” part.
With that said we wanted to take today to introduce you to the first two bands that will be helping us kick off our celebration. Starting us off with a BANG! will be Paragraph. These guys hale from Staten Island, bringing on some serious experimental pop rocking sounds and we are beyond excited to have them with us.
Filling out the second bands in our line up will be, Strawberry Hands. They will transport you to another reality, possibly another dimension with their tripped out, experimental electro-rock greatness. Prepare to be altered!
Look out for more info about the featured bands coming up this week and next.
The Birthday Bash is set to pop off on January 6th
