10 for 2010: #10 Keepaway
We’ve talked about Keepaway before, but I don’t think our 10 to watch in 2010 series would be complete without them. And I’m not just saying that because they’re our friends. In many ways, Keepaway, with their guitar, drums and synth combo, are typical of the Brooklyn Electronic/Indie scene.
But after seeing them live at Piano’s last Sunday night, I feel that they are much more than typical. In a small venue, with limited resources, they were able to take the sound of their studio tracks to an even fuller level. Above is a clip of their single “Yellow Wings” that our friend Anthony took on his iPhone. It’s just the intro and the sound’s not great, but you can feel the energy they produce. Keepaway’s next show is the Saturday before the Super Bowl and Brooklyn Bowl as part of the Sounds Like Brooklyn festival. See you there.

10 for 2010: #9 Screaming Females
If you’ve been following our posts then you already know how the Vagabonds feel about this band. I hear people saying their only fault is that they aren’t from Brooklyn because by now they would have blown up. Fuck that, they are way to raw for the bk hipsters and they are doing just fine for themselves. One of the best things about them is that they are from New Brunswick, NJ.
The band is comprised of three members Jarrett D. on drums, King Mike on Bass and Marissa P. shredding it on guitar and vocals. The first time I saw a video of them playing I was hooked they are rock and roll to the core and I can’t get enough. They also have a great blog complete with illustrations of their adventures on tour which you can find below along with their record label, Don Giovanni sampler that features three of their tracks free to download.
For those of you in the New York area you can catch them at the Don Giovanni showcase at The Bowery Ball Room, February 6th (also my day of birth). I’m sure it will be off the hook. A little birdie also told me that they will be playing at the Fire House in Northern Jersey for the next “Pantry Party” if so we will be there in force. Their song “Bell” is featured above. Other favorites include “Skull” and “I Do”. Check out the rest of their tracks on MySpace.

This one goes out to all you metal heads out there. Stryk Nine is an experimental metal core band out of Boston. If you’ve got the balls to listen to metal, these guys have got what it takes. They are going to do well for themselves this year, why not join in the fun? Start head banging, become a fan on Facebook and support METAL! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Stryk-Nine/10494937500?ref=ts

10 for 2010: #7 Angus and Julia Stone
“And the boys” by Angus and Julia Stone is the mesmerizing first track from their sophomore record ‘Down The Way’ due for release in March 2010. And if this is anything to go by, we’re in for a special treat from this Oz brother-sister due.
If your not able to make it down under within the next two months to catch the aussie leg of their tour, never fear. Tour dates for Europe, UK and USA will be posted soon at http://www.myspace.com/angusandjuliastone for around April/May 2010. Until then, you can get your fix by downloading their single from iTunes.

10 for 2010: #6 Drake
Now, I know what some of you are saying. You’re hollering about how Drake already rolls deep and you don’t need somebody else to tell you he’s on an upward trajectory. I put it you, however, that this fella has just touched the tip of the iceberg. He’s yet to release a full length album and he’s only put out 1 EP (2009’s So Far Gone). He is part of the Young Money crew, and that is certainly nothing to scoff at, but I’m sure we can all remember plenty of hip hop crews who’s members names are less than etched in our minds.
So, with the expected release of Thank Me Later, Drake’s first solo LP, in March and the fact that he’s rolling deep with Lil Wayne and Bun B in this track, Uptown, off of the So Far Gone ep/mixtape I’m gonna make a prediction that Drake becomes a superstar this year. Think Lil’ Wayne before the summer of 08. People who follow hip hop won’t be amazed, but everyone else will be shaking it.

10 for 2010: #5 Neon Indian
Vags - I give you all Neon Indian. The latest quasi techno, kinda MGMT sounding project out of everybody’s favorite borough - Brooklyn.
The band is originally from Austin, TX. The music is composed by Alan Palomo, also known for his work with the band Ghosthustler and as the artist VEGA.
Palomo is joined for the stage show by Ronald Gierhart (guitar, vocals), Jason Faries (drums), and Leanne Macomber (keyboard).
In October 2009, the group released its debut LP Psychic Chasms. The track featured in the video above, “Deadbeat Summer”, is one of my faves on the album and is sure to get your body moving.
Enjoy.

10 for 2010: #4 Zach Deputy
I present… [drum roll please]… Zach Deputy! As you saw in my Top 20 of the Decade, I voted “Twisty, Twisty” as one of the elite. I’m really having trouble tell you the genre he falls into, so I’ll direct you to his MySpace page for a description and more tunes!
Pay attention to him, I think he’s going to blow up this year. And lucky for all you Coloradans, he’ll be here all next week January 26th - 31st. Doesn’t get much better than that.
