Rising Denver-area blues rock band, The Amends took the stage Sunday night to promote their new album What We Could Be and rocked out to an eager crowd. The four-piece has been picking up steam lately, earning spins on college radio stations and notable reviews from publications such as Reverb.

I love the no-frills garage rock sound and catchy tunes. Their new album, What We Could Be (buy it for $5 on BandCamp!) shows their evolution in style and a tighter sound than ever. Check out the video for “A Certain Speed”, the first single off the album below. Expect to hear a lot more from and about these guys!

When not playing along side one of our favourites Holly Golightly, Lawyer Dave plays with some other brokeoffs, and sometimes brakes off by himself.

Here we witness Dave playing a classic rock favourite on the Broke-O-Matic drum set V4, a 1963 Guild Starfire through a Fender Blues Jr and an aluminum kazoo, make unknown.

“New Rochelle”, our featured single from New York area singer/song-writer Peter Kirk is a dark song about taking a night train and ending up somewhere you don’t belong. It mixes electronic elements with acoustic instruments - drum machine, piano, rock drums, and synth bells. It was definitely influenced by Bon Iver’s latest record and also Peter Gabriel’s “Family Snapshot.” Pete’s music in general is influenced by a mixture of 80’s pop like Phil Collins, Talking Heads, and new synth-heavy artists like Francis & the Lights.

If you live in NYC, check him out with Bright Light Bright Light at the Mercury Lounge on March 13th.
I’d like to introduce you all to a very talented Dutch goddess of Indonesian decent who goes by the moniker of Cosmo V. She is in every sense a bedroom artist, creating simplistic poetic, lo-fi bedroom pop, calling to mind artists like Lykki Li or Nico a la The Marble Index.

Ah, this takes me back to my industrial days. The Soft Moon categorizes themselves as neo-post-punk but with at least two dudes on the synthesizer, its like a flashback to 1990 and you just heard Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine album for the first time, except with a few modern tweaks.

Luis Vasquez and his band bring their dirty electronic sound to the present day with a focus on their live show. Ron Robinson does the visuals for the band, aiming to bring you a “full sensory experience”. Check it out!

“What was your favourite...

Frank Ocean - Channel Orange //

“What was your favourite part?” A workmate inquired about my recent trip home to Oz.

One might think a typical answer would include “sunshine, family, the beach” etc. Well…

1) The sun greeted me with 3rd degree burns within four hours of my arrival.

2) Family time is great, but is always accompanied by a heavy dose of Christmas dysfunction, which perhaps has nothing to do with Christmas at all.

3) The ocean is full of life-threatening predators that you suddenly become more aware of after moving to a city where your biggest threat is peak-hour travel using public transport.

No, this holiday was filled with a different kind of ocean after an encounter with a handsome gentleman who informed me of the following:

“Frank Ocean is a poet and a story-teller.”

Turns out he was as wise as he was handsome.

This might be old news to fans of Ocean’s work in hip hop collective Odd Future (OFWGKTA). He has also penned songs for Justin Beebs and John Legend, among A-list others. Over the past year MV has featured Ocean’s mixtape releases and collaborations, praising his originality and fresh R&B fusions.

Last year saw Ocean’s solo studio debut with “Channel Orange,” from which came the single “Pyramids” (see above) - a 9+ minute tale of a modern pimpers paradise fitted with a John Mayer guitar solo outro.

Another favourite is “Lost,” which I played on repeat for my entire 45 hour journey back to London, and still can’t get enough of it. Get yourself addicted here.

All in all, I think I need to return home for musical enlightenment more often. Just have to remember to pack more sunscreen.

[New Single] Vydamo - Gonna Make It //

MV knows that breakfast is the most important meal. ever. That’s why we’re loving the first single from Jim Finn’s (Art Vs Science) new side project Vydamo. Somewhat reminiscent of Fat Boy Slim’s “Praise You”. The forthcoming album is due out in 2013.
Why does the Chinese-Canadian DJ wear a fury, full-body koala suit? Because Eric San (aka Kid Koala) is a man of his word.

Kid Koala explained to his London crowd last night that the koala suit was the result of a lost bet. Expect the outfit to make 100 gig appearances.

So. Here is what you need to do:

1. Get a taste of his 12 bit blues over at Ninja Tune

2. Catch him performing all his wonderful bluesy bits on his latest Vinyl Vaudeville Tour.

3. Buy the album and make your own hand-spun tunes:

Warning, things are about to get hot and heavy up in here. Seriously, this video has multiple couples literally “latching” on to each other ushered by new comer and collaborator Sam Smith’s silky vocals perfectly capturing that feeling of the first time you fall head over heels in love with someone. In the way that you can’t keep your hands off each other and can’t wait to get them home alone. Oh man, that is the best!

It’s official there is no pop music that comes out of Denmark that I don’t immediately fall in love with. In my next life I plan to be reborn as a tall devastatingly beautiful blond Scandinavian pop star.

This 23 year-old songstress is currently in the studio completing her album with Ronni Vindahl of the Danish producers No Wav. If you’re around for CMJ in NYC make sure to catch her at the Yours Truly showcase at Glasslands Gallery. Check out “Pilgram” and her other video for “Maiden” another equally stunning edgy pop piece.

Rhye - The Fall

Not much is known about this soulful LA duo reminiscent of a young Sade that seemed to have appeared out of thin air and release on of my favorite little EP’s of the year.

Like me, you probably fell hard for Rhye after hearing their first single “Open.”All I can really say is that I wish the EP was more than three songs. I guess I’ll have to wait patiently like everyone else for their upcoming LP which has been rumored to drop in February 2013.

Tiger Dare - Coffee

Here’s a debut single worth listening to you from brooklyn-based Tiger Dare. If you’re into Widowspeak then you’ll probably dig this mellow little gem with it’s jangly guitar melody pushing it along. You might also learn a few little life lessons by listening closely to the lyrics. “The love you make in August is worth twice as much when it snows.” True that!

Tiger Dare are in the midst of recording their debut EP. You can keep up with their progress over on their site tigerdare.tumblr.com.

Soft Spot - Disciple Fix

Long time friends (since kindergarten) Sarah Kinlaw and Bryan Keller decided to start making music together in 2009. After teaming up with artist and drummer Andrew Spaulding in the Spring of 2011, the band evolved and saw the release of an EP entitled NOUS.

For a three piece their sound is surprisingly lush and layered. Sarah’s voice will undoubtedly enrapture you. “Disciple Fix” is the second single off their upcoming debut full length Enso which they will be releasing themselves on September 7th.

El Gato La Virgen & El Diablo - Pilletu

“Pilletu” is the first single from El Gato La Virgen & El Diablo which translates toThe Cat Lady and The Devil. While the track is great on its own is spectacular if you listen to it on the special site he’s created that features the little clips you see above. The clips are meant to be activated as the song is being played. The really add some extra depth to the the track. So simple yet so brilliant!

I love when beach pop isn’t produced anywhere near a beach. Listening to the lo-fi fuzzy beach pop created by Nashville locals Big Surr you would never know the difference.

A few months back they released this three track EP with the folks over at Infinity Cat Records. My personal favorite and first track “Cosine Tangent” has a pretty amazing guitar solo around 4:10 which for one perfect minute brings you straight out of the fuzziness before dropping you back in for the rest of the EP. I wish I had this album for the summers I spent getting baked and bruised on various Rhode Island beaches.

Apes & Horses

About three weeks back I was checking out Stadiums & Shrines website revamp (it looks great you should have a look) and I came across Parisian “Magenta” indie rockers Apes & Horses. I must have listened to the track ten times in a row and each time my heart nearly burst in to a billion bloody little pieces. While the four piece sounds tight and polished you will see that the lead singers voice has that certain je ne sais quoi.

In “Miracles” the track below he seems to be channeling a lofi version of The Boss especially when the chorus kicks in again at 3:48 and he wails “And we were young.” It just has Bruce written all over it. It’s almost ironic that a Parisian band can channel such a pure American icon. Oh well, c’est la vie.

See what I did there with all the French language references? Clever, no?

Oren Lyons - Forever Found

About two weeks I was introduced via email inbox (see I do read them) to this single from emerging LA based group Oren Lyons. This past January the group was formed by multi-instrumentalist composer Gueorgui Linev (formerly of Lonely Trees). You can hear his orchestral influence all over this track and it’s simply gorgeous.

Lead singer Kristianne Bautista vocals are so sultry and powerful as they wind their way perfectly through the grand instrumentation. As far as I can tell “Forever Found” is the only track they have released, but from what I’ve heard they’ll be releasing a full album this year. Something we can all look forward to!
